Bitcoin profit calculator

A bitcoin trade only pays what is left after the exchange takes its fee on the way in and on the way out, and after tax on the gain. Enter how much you invested, the price you bought and sold at, the fee on each side and your tax rate, and this calculator shows how much bitcoin you got, your profit and your break-even price. The table underneath tests the same trade at lower and higher exit prices.

How bitcoin profit is worked out

Fees are charged as a percentage on both the purchase and the sale. Tax is applied to a gain only.

  1. Bitcoin bought

The buy fee comes off your money first.

    BTC = invested × (1 − buy fee) ÷ buy price

  2. Sale value

BTC times the sale price, less the sell fee.

you get back = BTC × sell price × (1 − sell fee)

  3. Profit

What you get back minus what you invested, then tax on a gain.

    after tax = (back − invested) × (1 − tax)

  4. Break-even

The sale price that returns exactly what you put in.

    break-even = buy price ÷ ((1 − buy fee) × (1 − sell fee))

Bitcoin profit questions

How do I calculate my bitcoin profit?

Work out how much bitcoin your money bought after the buying fee, multiply it by the sale price, take off the selling fee and subtract what you originally put in. $5,000 at $40,000 with a 0.5 percent fee buys about 0.1244 BTC; selling it at $60,000 with another 0.5 percent fee returns about $7,425, a profit of roughly $2,425 before tax.

Why include exchange fees?

Fees come off both ends of the trade and can be larger than they look. Instant-buy buttons and card payments often charge 1.5 to 4 percent, while order-book trading on the same exchange might cost 0.1 to 0.6 percent. On a quick trade, fees can turn a small gain into a loss.

What is my break-even price?

The bitcoin price at which selling returns exactly what you put in, after both fees. It is always a little above your buy price. The calculator shows it so you know the minimum sale price that avoids a loss.

Do I pay tax on bitcoin profits?

In many countries, yes. Selling, swapping or spending bitcoin is often a taxable event, and the gain is taxed at income or capital gains rates depending on how long you held it. Rules vary widely, so check those that apply to you.

What is a satoshi?

The smallest unit of bitcoin: one hundred millionth of a coin. Small purchases are often easier to think about in satoshis, or sats. The calculator shows both.

Can I use this for other coins?

Yes. The maths is the same for any coin bought and sold for dollars. For a portfolio of several coins, our crypto ROI calculator adds them up and annualises the return.
